Today’s conversation topic of the day (at least here at work) has been gardening. I think we’re all feeling the effects of the lengthening daylight hours, (slightly) warmer weather, and re-emerged songbirds. I love talking about gardening almost as much as I love gardening itself. Not only do I get get to share my success stories, I get to pick others’ brains and glean new ideas from them.
I’m planning on planting spinach, beets, carrots, and perhaps some lettuce this weekend. I need to get started–I have three times as much garden space this year as we had last year! I am definitely going to be kept busy all spring and summer. I also need to start preparing the small strip of lawn that we’re converting to space for raspberry canes and a larger strawberry bed. (Those strawberries are always trying to take over new space! I started with 4 spindly plants less than two years ago; now they’re running amuck!)
So, who else has started planting (or at least planning)?
Since moving into the new house I have done absolutely nothing with the backyard but I really, really want to. Right now it’s just a big square plot of land. There aren’t any trees or anything. I know I want to do a garden, I just can’t decide where I want to put it. At the very least, even if I don’t get around to creating a proper garden, I’ll plant some tomatoes and basil. I NEED fresh tomatoes!
Yay for having your own land in which to plant a garden! 🙂
Oh gardens ! and garden-talk : ) and garden-eating !
As a young child Alverna and her compatriot brother_the eldest_ would go into the garden and mooch all the ripe cherry tomatoes and peppers. Of course, later with great numbers coming on ripe, the household had plenty despite their eager garden-appetites. Yes, peppers..they ate them like delicious apples.
As a mulch-gardener, today has me excited. Twenty Old Hay bales are lined-up for my purchase as of last night. I only need to find them transport. The earthworms (soil-jockeys) will remain my good workers all summer once the mulch is laid on the garden (moisture held in / soil will be kept cool) My soil-aerating earthworm friends will find delight in working up near ground level instead of keeping their activities deep during the heat of the summer.
What a great spring for the cole-plants in my region. Today I want to start cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage in cell packs for the fall crop.
May I have any strawberry runners you don’t want, Alverna ?
